Certificate in English for Health Professionals (OET)
The English for health professionals programme is a full-time course, designed for medical professionals, especially nurses, who want to improve their English before taking the OET or IELTS exam.
International students can enrol for 12 or 24 weeks, The 12 week course involves study in the morning and afternoon. The 24 week programme combines English study in the morning and the opportunity to look for care-giving work in the afternoon.
   
Course Purpose:
The main purpose of the English language course is to help students pass the Occupational English Test (OET). Students may also have the option of sitting the IELTS exam. The course is primarily designed for overseas trained nurses who want to work in New Zealand or Australia but it is also suitable for other health professionals e.g. dentists, who are wanting to improve their English language skills in a medical context.
After successfully sitting the OET some candidates may be required to complete a competence assessment programme (CAP) to demonstrate their professional ability in order to start working in NZ. ETC collaborates with providers who offer those courses, for example UCOL Palmerston North.
Entry Requirements:
Students are expected to have completed training as a health professional in their own country and 360 hours of clinical experience.
Students are expected to have an overall IELTS score of 6.0 with no score less than 5.5 (Other equivalent English tests will also be considered)
Entry to this qualification is limited. A CV should be submitted with each application. Preference will be given to students with IELTS 6.0 or higher in reading and writing.
